In the summer of 2068, New Yorker Martin Jacob had a sweet life ahead of him. He had recently graduated from NYU. He spent most of his time with his artist girlfriend, who had a wonderful apartment in Harlem. And in September, he was to begin his career as a History teacher for a private school in Connecticut. An easy life was laid out before him. Then a man-made virus came along, and it turned his world upside down.

Martin wakes to find a disheveled President addressing the nation. His girlfriend is driven mad with grief, right before his very eyes. His parents call to inform him that they are going to die. And he steps outside to find Martial Law on the streets.

"The Days and Months We Were First Born- The Unraveling" is book one of Martin's epic tale of survival. At times funny, at times heartbreaking, and at times action packed, this book will take the reader on an unforgettable journey.

While cruising for free books by indie authors i stumbled upon this book. Initially, honestly, i passed over the title a few times. I couldn't imagine a book with a title like this one would be interesting, plus the generic stock photo book cover? i thought ok this is some horoscope type thing.

you know what they say about judging a book by its cover? dont. and dont judge this one by that standard because..... you will miss out.

I was in love quickly. I am so grateful that i went ahead and try it. I am so excited that by 10% i knew that i'd scarcely be able to put my kindle down.

I saw other reviews that complained of slight typos, and i mean slight. i have a knack for finding the wrong word that was spell checked right (for instance instead of rain the typo read ran) but it was a weird random error. the complaint of inappropriate italics lead me to think that they were really bad. yup they are used a lot but it fit.

indeed it is a novel divided into 3 bits. individual sections do not stand alone. I got lucky in getting book 2 free. i wouldnt have bought book 2 on just book one, but i have an exceedingly tight budget. i did buy book 3 since i was drawn to the story and i was 2/3 the way thru. this is the only reason it lost a star, $2.99 a section is steep.

I was actually quite surprised with the level of detail in the new modern world. its a stretch to believe that in less than 60 years the world would make these sort of tech breakthrus but look at the 1950's and what we have now. that hurdle was passed. I find the dramatic restructuring of the US cool. its an odd coincidence that the US in the book was a post bankruptcy US given the latest dramatics in our government and its fiscal matters. I adore the making the main character a history teacher because it gave a plausible reason for explaining the restructuring that was done in the past.

Most of all I love love love that this was just an epidemic story. viruses that kill people then turn them into mindless zombies are a dime a dozen. this story is fathomable and just enough reality to have fun with it. its not just common. i love the way they describe individuals and their personalities after the end of the world. the survivors are real. some are poaching jerks, some are trying to do the best they can to live right.

The Days and Months We Were First Born The Unraveling edition by Christopher Hunter Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

End of the world as we know it. I tried to read this book made it about 24% before just giving up. The End of the world has not been more poorly thought out in many decades.

Example (paraphrasing) The bad stuff is air born, here is a mask, go get tested. He gets tested, there are two choices, you are either infected already or you are immune, there is no third option. Mask is pointless...

The main character has no redeeming qualities, there are no scenes that have not been done (much) better in books and movies dozens and dozens of times. There is nothing that makes you want read, except you keep thinking. wow three book series, there must be something here. If there was it was after I got tired of the pointless, stupid story.
I seem to be on an apocalyptic reading streak lately, and adding this one to the list has the proverbial super-virus that wipes out most of humanity.

After I started this one I mentally said "it's going to be the same old same ole" but I was wrong without having a spoiler, the author does a good job of getting you into the heads of his characters without going off of the deep end with some scientific mumbo-jumbo. Sure, there is destruction of modern society, but this is really a novella into the human psyche - what would you do in the struggle if you were in the characters' position?

Mr. Hunter did a good job of setting the stage for his story, and I enjoyed this one enough to purchase the second installment of the story. If you're looking for a good end of the world series, I would recommend giving this one a shot.
Since I read Books 2 and 3 right after I finished Book 1 this review will refer to all 3 books. When I first picked up The Days and Months We Were First Born - The Unraveling (Book 1) I wasnt't sure what to expect. My favorite read has always been post apocalyptic but they usually involve zombies or monsters. The book didn't have anything like that. It was realistic and down to earth. I think this is probably one of the closest books to describe what would really happen should a global catastrophe happen. I was hooked from the beginning. Before I even finished this one I had to go online and get Books 2 and 3. It was that good. Books 2 and 3 did not disappoint. I loved the characters and the storyline. Martin's humanity; Carl and Mary's toughness; and Melinda's struggle to survive. I was rooting for them the whole time. I was disappointed that the series had to end but they say good things must end. I hope Christopher Hunter writes more because I will definitely will buy the next book.
This book is set in the future... a future not too different from now. Just some different gadgets.

Martin and his girlfriend, Julie... are getting ready for breakfast. They live in NY and enjoy the parks and all the restaurants and activities there.
A world-wide epidemic is announced on the TV and Martin flips it off because he thinks it just about another variety of flu. Just another flu scare.

Except for a few people who are immune to the epidemic, everyone exposed will be dead of a form of lung cancer within days to months. There is no cure. Julie gets a call from her parents and Martin gets a call from his parents.

An extremely well-written book, this story addresses many different issues as the story keeps moving right along. Smoking, relationships, gangs, doomsday weapons, humanity.

If books two and three continue the story and the quality remains the same... they will be well worth reading.

This is literature! Not a simple easy read... but a great read! In a slightly futuristic setting. I can't wait to see where the story will take me!
I highly recommend this read. It's not cozy... not a quick read... and is very short... but I can't stress enough how excellent the writing is. The author has crafted this story well.
